How to Dispute Charges When Not Satisfied With a Purchase

One of the most significant advantages of using a credit card to make purchases is you have additional protection provided by the creditor in case you make a purchase that you are completely satisfied with. Maybe there was a time you used a credit card to pay the contractors you hired to repair a leaky shower faucet but there is still water all over your bathroom floor. The fact is that you are not satisfied with the work they completed and you don’t want to pay for something that wasn’t delivered as promised. The only problem is that you charged it on your credit card and now the bill has come due.

The first step to dispute the charge is to contact the contractor or merchant from whom you made your purchase. More often than not, a merchant will be more than happy to replace a broken item, perform the service again or refund the purchase price back to your credit card. Whenever you make a phone call, document it and follow up with a letter to cover your tracks in the event the merchant doesn’t follow through with his/her promises.

If for some reason the contractor or merchant decides that they are not going to do anything to remedy the situation, you should then contact your credit card company and report the information as precisely as possible. Don’t wait to report the problem at a later date. Most credit card companies will require you to report a problem as soon as you see it on your statement in order to utilize any of the protection they provide. They may also have a limitation on the number of days a consumer has to report a disputed item.
